چکیده

Average 29 1y1m 3y7m 25 Abstract-Clinical application of FES using percutaneous intramuscular electrodes in paraplegia was described. Maximum duration of continuous standing was 150 minutes and maximum distance of continuous walking was 300m with hybrid FES. Only one electrode broke (0.6%). There were 5.6% of movement of electrodes and 5.6% of superficial infections. However, the ultrafine intramuscular electrode was practical and available for long term use in paraplegic patients. Our results suggest that hybrid-FES using percutaneous intramuscular electrodes provides practical ambulation in paraplegics.

Inverted Pendulum Standing Apparatus for Investigating Closed-Loop Control of Ankle Joint Muscle Contractions during Functional Electrical Stimulation

The restoration of arm-free standing in individuals with paraplegia can be facilitated via functional electrical stimulation (FES). In developing adequate control strategies for FES systems, it remains challenging to test the performance of a particular control scheme on human subjects. In this study, we propose a testing platform for developing effective control strategies for a closed-loop FE...

Control of posture with FES systems.

One of the major obstacles in restoration of functional FES supported standing in paraplegia is the lack of knowledge of a suitable control strategy. The main issue is how to integrate the purposeful actions of the non-paralysed upper body when interacting with the environment while standing, and the actions of the artificial FES control system supporting the paralyzed lower extremities. In thi...

Nonlinear modelling of FES-supported standing up in paraplegia for selection of feedback sensors

This paper presents analysis of the standing–up manoeuvre in paraplegia considering the body supportive forces as a potential feedback source in FES-assisted standing–up. The analysis investigates the significance of particular feedback signals to the human body centreof-mass (COM) trajectory reconstruction. Two nonlinear empirical modeling methods are implemented (Gaussian process priors (GP) ...

Standing stability of the medial linkage KAFOs using functional electrical stimulation in complete paraplegia

A medial linkage device called Primewalk was developed by Saitoh et al. to connect two KneeAnkle-Foot Orthoses (KAFOs). This device enabled to improve for paraplegic gait not only using orthosis but addition to functional electrical stimulation (FES). The purpose is to investigate the postural stability with the Primewalk device liked KAFOs in a paraplegic patient using FES. The complete T8 par...

Problems associated with FES-standing in paraplegia.

Prolonged immobilization, such as occurs after the spinal cord injury (SCI), results in several physiological problems. It has been demonstrated that the standing posture can ameliorate many of these problems. Standing exercise can be efficiently performed by the help of functional electrical stimulation (FES). The first application of FES to a paraplegic patient was reported by Kantrowitz in 1...
